The Intercontinental Shrine
interactive data/material-transfer
Stuttgart (Germany)- Hangzhou (China)- Pretoria (South Africa)

22 students and their professor from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design Stuttgart have created the idea of an intercontinental exchange of hard materials such as wood, metal and fabrics as well as soft data in form of e-mails and websites. Everyone of these artists created his or her own little artwork which is hosted in two shrines with the size of 100 x 50 x 30 cm and 12 kilos weight. One of the shrines is sent to South Africa. The other is sent to Hangzhou, China. Photos with different backgrounds show the shrine in its new environment. Interesting is the reaction of the people, when they see the shrine and how the german artworks look like, when they are beside a chinese pagoda or backgrounded by a scenic view of the West Lake in Hangzhou. This confrontation is topic of an exhibition which takes place in the internet, so that everyone, who is interested in the project can visit the exhibition without having to come to Stuttgart. The process, which is initiated by the two shrines can go on and lead from a transfer of data and material to a come-together of people of different nations and culture.
